<< ROAD TO HANA HANA PAIA 43 M ILES F RO M P A IA T O HANA Plan on a 2-3 hour journey from Paia, depending on how many stops you make along the way. First Stop: paia Paia Town has a feeling unlike anywhere else on Maui - artistic, laid back and mellow, with some of the kindest people on the island. It all started with the old Paia Store in 1896, but the vibe hasn't changed much from its early days. Quaint little boutiques, eateries, and galleries line the town's streets, which are made up of just a few blocks. When driving to Hana, Paia will be your first main stop. Stores start opening around 9 or 10 in the morning, but you'll find a few places open earlier selling coffee and souvenirs. On your way back from Hana, the town will be wide awake, with restaurants, boutiques and galleries in full swing. If you get the chance to drive up the main road a few miles (Baldwin Ave.), you'll find two very cool historic churches. The Makawao Union Church was built in 1916 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, while the Holy Rosary features a beautiful statue of Father Damien helping a Hansen's disease patient. e Road to Hana EXPLORING MAUI In the early 1900s, when the Paia Sugar Mill was open, 1/5 of Maui's population lived in Paia. Today, the population is less than 3,000. >> Along the Road to Hana Twin Falls Just after mile marker 2, pull into the large turnout on your right. Look for the sign "Twin Falls" and the roadside stand. This is the first of many waterfalls, but here you can take a gentle hike and easily get into the water. 58 << ROAD TO HANA Maui Magazine • MauiMagazines.pub
