Whale National Marine Sanctuary. Humpbacks are listed as an endangered species; they're protected by both federal and state regulations. The Sanctuary encompasses a variety of marine ecosystems, including seagrass beds and coral reefs, and promotes the management, research, education, and long-term monitoring of the humpbacks. For more information on the exact location of the sanctuary, see our Sanctuary Map (page 60).
