In contrast to the ravaged coral resources in other parts of the world, for 37 years he worked hard to protect the coral reef, harvesting the coral using ancient Hawaiian fishing traditions and principles, only harvesting the black coral for a few days each year to fill his quota and following a strict size guideline (48" limit) to ensure that the yield stayed sustainable. Over the years the black coral divers and these strict principles have been featured in National Geographic, Thalassa (European Television) and several magazines. Robin was born and raised in Kaaawa Oahu on June 9, 1948. He served with the US Navy in Vietnam 1968 -1969 and on his return he joined the Honolulu Fire Department becoming the youngest Fire Captain in the State. After suffering an accident that left him 2 weeks in a coma, and using a wheelchair for six months, he was told he would never walk again, much less dive, but that special pride among divers kept him diving until his recent death in January of 2012. Maui celebrates his life. Black Coral Jewelry: The coral that Robin harvested throughout his lifetime is still used by his wife Victoria, who is a jewelry designer and owner of Aulani Jewelry. She works the coral into beautiful and one-of-a- kind pieces you will only find at Aulani Jewelry. Stop in today to find the perfect gift or your very own Made on Maui limited edition keepsake.
