Every year, right after Halloween, a subtle
excitement seems to creep into my consciousness.
Over the years, I've identified it as the awesome
realization that the humpback whales are on their
back way to Maui.
This spectacular annual event, where thousands of
humpback whales migrate back to the Hawaiian
Islands from Alaska, attracts people from all over
the world. The shallow waters between Maui,
Lanai, Molokai and Kaho'olawe provide the safe
epicenter for their breeding and birthing rituals.
I, like you, am privileged to witness the incredible
array of behaviors by one of the greatest
performing species on the planet. And then,
while quietly observing them, we can realize their
spiritual nature and make the connection with
them in their natural habitat.
As you enjoy this season with the whales, please
recognize the vital importance of speaking out
and acting out to preserve the sovereign rights of
these animals, as well as that of all our oceans'
beautiful creatures.
