Okay, the truth is that we've visited Upcountry Maui lots of
times, but each time we tell visitors new to the island we went "Upcountry,"
we often get a blank look or "Where?" Everyone's aware there's a volcano on Maui
(actually two), and plenty of coasts, but the area around
one particular volcano (Haleakala), is so magical that we
felt we had to bring it to the attention of the thousands
of visitors missing it when they come to the Valley Isle.
So, for the first time ever, we're featuring it with it's own
article and map (the Maui Driving Map, that is). Get ready
to find out what everyone's been missing!
Helpful tip 1:
Be on time for sunrise! Check
out AlohaSunrise.info to find
out when the sun is rising, and
make your reservation up to 60
days in advance. It gets cold so
remember to bring a jacket and
someone to snuggle with!
Helpful tip 2:
Remember to bring your
camera. The views from the
summit are breathtaking,
and as you descend the slopes
you'll want to capture the big
skies and lush expansion of
temperate Upcountry greenery.
Helpful tip 3:
If at all possible, plan your
trip to Upcountry Maui
around a zipline tour or
downhill bike adventure.
Both activities are really
fun, unique to that part of
Maui, and well worth it.
Helpful tip 4:
At the end of your day trip, in
the town of Paia, stop by Hana
Picnic Lunch for some food or
smoothies. Paia is a great place
to walk around, stretch your legs
after a long drive, and visit the
unique shops and galleries.
