TO DO things on the Great Drives around Maui >> Paia Gelato By now, both of us were getting hungry for lunch, and lucky for us, our next stop was full of great places to eat, shop and explore. Often called "the Cowboy Town of Maui," Makawao is filled with country western storefronts and even hitching posts for the occasional horses ridden into town. We strolled into a local eatery called Casanova and ordered an oven-roasted turkey sandwich with rosemary mustard, along with two cappuccinos. Ahh, we were in heaven. Afterwards we were pleasantly surprised, when at many of the art galleries we strolled into, we were able to meet the actual artists. We saw a glassblower creating an orb filled with small colorful glass jellyfish, and another artist painting a street scene of the town with people walking by. Everyone was super friendly, and the shops were filled with lots of unique clothing and gifts. We also picked up handmade Maui soap at Sherri Reeve Gallery, which will be great for gifts. Next stop: Alii Lavender Farm With over 55,000 purple lavender plants on over 10 acres, Alii's farm is truly something to behold. As we strolled through the gardens and boutique, we became lost in tranquillity and beauty that is rarely paralleled in this world. Before leaving for our next destination, we couldn't help but sample some tasty lavender delicacies, and pick up some lavender lotion and treats to take home.
