40 MM 32 Waianapanapa MM 42 Haleakala National Park {Oheo Gulch} Bamboo Forest Kipahulu You'll have two choices for the drive home when leaving Hana: either go back the way you came, or keep going towards the south side of the island. If you continue past Oheo Gulch, you'll see the Kaupo Store, Huakini Bay (with its unusual bluish grey rocks) and the Pokowai Sea Arch. This route is not necessarily a faster way back, but it takes you through Ulupalakua, past Tedeschi Vineyard, and down the slopes of Haleakala (see our Volcano Coast section on page 36). If it's been raining or is aer 3pm, we don't suggest this road, as there are high oceanside cliffs and some sections that are unpaved and only one lane. Also, many car rental companies prohibit driving in this area (check your rental agreement). Estimated time to Central Maui: 4 hours. 6 Just before the town of Hana, and a little past mile marker 32, is one of the most special places on Maui. This small family-run recreational area offers incredible views, pounding surf, a blowhole, and a pebbly black sand beach. But the best part about it is the trail. Aer parking, walk to your le and you'll see the sign that tells the story about an ancient princess who was murdered there. Then walk the meandering path through the hau forest. It feels like you're in a storybook, like Alice in Wonderland in Hawaii. You'll definitely need your camera here. Waianapanapa Located 9.1 miles past the town of Hana at mile marker 42, is Oheo Gulch, oen referred to as the 'Seven Sacred Pools'. It was so named in 1947 as an attempt to attract visitors. It worked! Look for the parking lot and picnic area. This is a great place to play and swim, however, be cautious in heavy rains when the water is flowing ($10 park fee). 7 Oheo Gulch Located just above the Oheo Gulch, this is one of the best hikes on Maui. It's 4 miles round trip, and reaches an elevation of 650 . Plan on spending about 2 hours or longer, depending on how much you rest and sightsee.
