<< ROAD TO HANA 58 BEACHES Hookipa Known to many as the "Windsurfing Capital of the World," and home to the Maui Makani Classic, an American Windsurfing Tour event, this little beach boasts some of the biggest waves and most powerful wind in Hawaii. Located about 2 miles past Paia Town, look for the steep road on your left - just past it is Hookipa Lookout. Pull over here to watch the surf. SHOPPING Sand & Sea With so many stores on Maui selling things at high prices, Sand & Sea is a refreshing change. Filled with hand crafted items made by locals from Maui and Hawaii, and featuring Maui-made jams and jellies, this store has a great selection of take-home items that will keep you reminded of our Valley Isle. Those looking to spruce up their tree will also want to check out their Christmas ornaments. >> Along the Road to Hana Twin Falls Just after mile marker 2, pull into the large turnout on your right. Look for the sign "Twin Falls" and the roadside stand. This is the first of many waterfalls, but here you can take a gentle hike and easily get into the water. Waikamoi Located just after mile marker 10, this is one of the most beautiful 70' waterfalls on Maui (often not visible unless it's been raining). If it's flowing, for the best view, take a short hike upstream - it's worth it. As always, be careful and watch your step. Make sure you have sturdy shoes if it's wet! Garden of Eden With amazing flowers, plants, and trees, The Garden of Eden Botanical Garden offers over 500 of the most beautiful indigenous specimens, each one individually botanically labelled. The $15 fee per person allows you to drive or walk the beautiful gardens, but we highly suggest you walk. There are many very fragrant flowers you'll want to smell along the paths. e Road to Hana EXPLORING MAUI continued on page 60
