Ocean Action Fun Aside from boat cruises (see page 22), there's a whole world of ocean sports awaiting you. Stand Up Paddleboarding has become very popular in Maui, and a great way to explore along the coastline with the sea turtles. Kayaking gets you really close to the sea life too, without engines or sails, whether you rent or go on a tour. Surfing Lessons are an absolute blast, regardless of your age. Plus it's much easier than you think when you have an instructor showing you how. Jet Skiing, only allowed on Maui from May 16th to December 14th due to the whale watching season, takes place off the coast of Kaanapali and is always one of the most popular water sports, while FlyBoarding, one of Maui's newest activities, straps your feet into a turbo-charged water propulsion unit, rocketing you up to 40' in the air it's absolutely surreal! And finally, it's worth explaining what Snuba is, as some of the boats now offer it. It's like scuba diving but without the tanks on your back. There's no experience necessary, and you can stay underwater for up to 20 minutes at a time - even kids are allowed to go! See page 22 for a list of Snuba providers. Biking Down Maui's Volcano: Haleakala This is something you'll only find on Maui. Biking down Haleakala Volcano scores as our #5 activity. If you can ride a Enchanting Sunset Dinner & Cocktail Cruises The 7th best activity on Maui is a Sunset Dinner or Cocktail Cruise. Not only will you enjoy great cuisine (and we mean it the food is really excellent), but on these trips you'll watch the sunset while cruising along the gorgeous coast of Maui, and perhaps even get kissed (you might want to bring someone for this part). Expect to board between 4:00pm and 5:00pm, while it's still nice and light out. Most of these cruises last about 2-2 1 /2 hours, depending on the company and the type of trip, and will feature an assortment of delicious food and beverages. Most offer vegan and or vegetarian options and even gluten- free choices as well. Dinner tickets usually include 2 alcoholic beverages, but there's a cash bar and unlimited sodas, juice and coffee on board. Most of the dinner cruises also feature live music. During the months of December through April you'll likely see the majestic humpbacks while cruising, and throughout the year keep your eyes peeled for turtles and the occasional dolphin. The companies we like best for Sunset Dinner Cruises are Calypso (442- 3264) departing out of Maalaea Harbor, Hawaii Ocean Project's Maui Princess (667- 6165) departing from Lahaina Harbor, and Quicksilver (442-3264), also out of Lahaina Harbor. Bon voyage! five number six number seven number bike, this is an activity you won't want to miss! Not only are the vistas at the top of Haleakala breathtaking, but coasting down the volcano on a bike is an absolute blast. Rides start at 6,500 ft., and you'll see the "Volcano Coast" of Maui, including cows, farms, flower gardens, horses, Makawao (The Cowboy Town), pineapple fields, and incredible views. Transportation is included on many sunrise and day tours. Sunrises are spectacular, but be prepared to leave at 2:30am or earlier (and that's not a typo!). Also, for sunrise trips dress warmly; it gets VERY cold (30°– 40° F) at the top of Haleakala. Breakfast or lunch is optional (depending on what trip you take) and a fun time is guaranteed for everyone. Our favorite bike company is Bike Maui (575-9575). They'll give you personalized service, and the best experience possible riding down the volcano, and even pick you up at your hotel if you want. But don't forget to bring your sunglasses, sunscreen and jacket!
