42 Slowing Down on MAUI Taking in the sights while exploring the island! I've lived on Maui for 24 years now. Shortly aer moving here, someone suggested that I go to Hana - they told me it was amazing. So early one beautiful morning, I woke up my son and his mom. We grabbed our camera, some towels, sunscreen and diapers, piled into our car, and started our journey to this exciting place called Hana. ur first stop was in Paia, where we grabbed a take out lunch from a place called Picnics (now closed), continued past the windsurfers at Hookipa, and drove the long and winding road to Hana. Along the way we saw some cars stopped by the side of the road, but we wanted to get there ASAP so, except for one bathroom stop and diaper change, we drove straight there. After 2 hours we knew we were getting close. We stopped in a sleepy little village and asked where the adventure town of Hana was. They said we were in Hana. We said, "Oh, well where is all the stuff to see?" And they replied, "what stuff?" Without going into it too much more, we were misled. Hana is not an exciting destination spot. There are no movie theatres, no theme parks, no ancient ruins to explore, and no water slides. We drove down to this place called the Seven Sacred Pools, which we discovered later was given that name by someone trying to market Hana as a tourist destination. It was raining and muddy. The waterfalls and streams were brown. Our baby was crying. We ate our lunch in the car and had an argument. The ride home was slow and frustrating and it seemed everyone had the same experience as us. Now, flash forward 24 years, to just a few months ago when I was invited to go to Hana. I hadn't been there since my first and only time. Our web guy, Greg, has been there many times and supposedly "loves it!" So I took him along. I've been a publisher now for 24 years and have heard many different stories about Hana. I've heard that by slowing down and stopping along the Road to Hana at all the waterfalls & overlooks, at the beach parks and fruit stands, and by listening to a Road to Hana Guided CD, I would appreciate Hana in a O Great Drives around Maui "We stopped in a sleepy little village and asked where the adventure town of Hana was."
