36 HANA 1. Explore Paia Get some gas (no station until Hana) and take in the relaxed vibe of this town some refer to as "Maui's Hippie Haven." Don't miss Sand & Sea for your Maui made gis. 2. Fuel Yourself Grab a picnic lunch and smoothies at Hana Picnic Lunch Co. in Paia (open from 7am) and stop by Hana Fresh (open 9am- 2pm) in Hana. 3. Stay Dry It rains on the way to Hana... a lot. Bring a rain poncho or umbrella and a few plastic Ziplocs for your camera and wallet. Too late? Stop by Hana Picnic Lunch Co. for supplies. 4. Stay Safe When you get out to explore, remember that many areas will be muddy, slippery, steep, or heck, all three. Be careful! 5. Bring a Swimsuit It's romantic to skinny dip near a waterfall, but the Road to Hana is pretty popular and you probably won't be alone. Pack a suit and towel just to be safe. 6. Never Get Lost Don't miss sights. Grab a Hana CD Tour (Hana Picnic Lunch Co., in Paia) or download GyPSy Guide's Hana tour App (GypsyGuide.com). 7. Stop & Sample Fresh Tastes Stop at "Halfway to Hana" for fresh baked banana bread, and the Hana Fresh Farm Stand for organically grown delicious treats. 8. Your Final Stop On the way home be sure to stop in at Paia Gelato for fresh Maui-made gelato, and a java boost for the last leg of your journey. (continued on page 38) We are comfortable saying that the Road to Hana is our personal favorite in terms of scenic highways. Don't take our word for it, though -- on the following pages check out the photos of the sights this famous road offers. The road starts on route 36 in Paia, and then the mile markers reset to 0 when Route 36 becomes 360 - a good time to reset your odometer. One note of caution: Never leave valuables in your unattended car or trunk - better safe than sorry! This 42-mile road (from mile-marker 0) is literally carved into the side of the island and offers some of the world's most breathtaking oceanfront scenery. >> the Road to Hana Helpful Tips along the way: >> START: Great Drives around Maui See map page 70.
